Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Department of Transportation to remove decorative crosswalks bearing rainbow or other non-standard designs, ordering cities and counties to eliminate “decorative crosswalks, murals, or markings conveying artwork or other messages” from their roadways within 30 days—or risk losing state funding.

The move mandates that pavement markings such as murals, flags, or symbols conveying messages be stripped unless they serve a direct traffic control or safety function. Local governments in places like Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio are now under pressure to decide whether to comply or challenge the order.

"None of this is in the name of public safety," James Poindexter of Pride San Antonio told News4SA. "It's all in the name of political stunt."
