You’ve seen and you’re gonna see a lot of intimate storytelling on my channel. But one general rule I tend to follow is that I don’t talk about things from my personal life that still affect me. I can get emotional about things from my past, but usually, it’s an emotion that’s old, familiar, and manageable.

This video is probably a bigger peek behind the curtain than I usually permit.

If you’ve watched most of my videos the past several months, then you likely already understand where I’m coming from and why the launch of this second book has been “harder than any marathon I’ve ever run.” It has not been easy to straddle the advocacy I feel strongly about while being a cookbook author.

I started storytelling voiceovers over my cooking videos back in 2020, when it didn’t really exist. I wanted to amplify the stories of immigrant families like my own. I wanted to give voice to the silenced words of women. And I wanted to empower people with compassion. But I’m starting to wonder whether the world has room for stories like mine, or whether my stories will just get buried with negativity, “wellness” culture, and an unapologetic stifling of challenging speech.

To everyone running this Sunday at the Chicago Marathon, I wish you courage, strength, and solidarity. I hope all of you achieve your own PBs.

Finally, my book, Homemade, which comes out on Oct 14, is a culmination of 4 years of work. It is meant to give you a slice of joy in all this chaos. But mostly, it is a love letter to the family that’ll be waiting for me when I round the corner to this marathon.

I can’t wait to celebrate with all of you at the finish.
