TRUTH ABOUT RECOVERY AFTER PREGNANCY.
It is jaw-dropping how little advocacy exists for the recovery after giving birth. It’s like the second your new person leaves your cavity, the level of care falls to the floor. There’s a lot to unpack there, but you’re here for the fitness side of that story.

There is no snapback. That 6 week check-up is almost a joke.
The truth is that pregnancy causes your abdomen to separate (diastases recti) and stresses your pelvic floor. This is part of the pregnancy journey, no one gets to skip that. And so after 9+ months of your organs moving, appearing/disappearing, bones resetting, etc. rehabilitation is necessary.
Because exercise is such an important part of my life and after speaking to many people who never recovered properly from birth, I decided to seek a physical therapist.

I worked with @solutionsphysicaltherapy on my recovery. They’ve helped me before with some hip issues, so I was delighted when I found out they helped with #postpartum recovery. Our work started at the very basics with breathing exercises and advanced all the way to dynamic movement (see jumps). We were focused on functionality. We trained around the repetitive movements required with a newborn, e.g. carrying a packed car seat up and down a flight of stairs, stowing away a stroller, walking with the weight of a baby and a diaper bag. I even got to exercise with my baby! Ame was always by my side at sessions.

By six months PPD, I was able to start teaching again and join my HIIT classes. Today, at 7 months PPD, I’m still a work in progress and I’m still seeking care for my pelvic floor. I tell everyone my story bc this was the part of my motherhood journey that I could not read or research about. Not a single book or website encouraged me to seek professional help. This is the part that everyone glosses over and still we’re expected to get back in shape, go back to work and a raise a whole human. If this was eye-opening, please share and spread the word!
