Today, we acknowledge the roots of the University of Illinois as a land-grant institution—and the truth behind that land. 🌎

The Morrill Act of 1862 distributed “public lands” to states to fund universities. But those lands were taken from Indigenous peoples—through war, forced removal, and broken treaties. Illinois received land in Nebraska and Minnesota, homelands of the Otoe,
 Dakota, and Ojibwe tribes. 🪶

Respecting the past means acknowledging it fully.⁣
