Study Abroad Spotlight: Grant Peterson ’27 – New Zealand 🇳🇿

Meet Grant Peterson, an engineering science major with a minor in mathematics and physics from Boulder, Colorado.

This semester, he’s studying in Auckland, New Zealand, a decision made easy by the country’s natural beauty. “New Zealand may be fairly small, but the number of climate zones and natural splendor for its land area is hard to beat,” Grant says.

In addition to courses in thermodynamics, modern physics, statistics, and material science, he has appreciated New Zealand’s unique academic style, which emphasizes major projects and final exams.

Outside the classroom, he has enjoyed exploring local restaurants and spending time with new friends from the IFSA study abroad program and the Navigators, a Christian group on his campus. 

During mid-semester break, Grant and several friends traveled to Rotorua, Wellington, Abel Tasman, Taranaki, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, and Hobbiton.

“I would highly recommend Rotorua and Abel Tasman,” he says. “Rotorua is a thermal wonderland with a redwood forest and a fun activity called the luge, and Abel Tasman is one of New Zealand’s phenomenal national parks.”

Grant also recommends exploring New Zealand’s diverse culinary scene. “I went to a Cambodian restaurant called Siem Reap in Wellington and had a dish called Loc Lak, which was sooo good!” he says.

Reflecting on his experience, he adds, “I would highly recommend studying abroad to anyone! You may miss out on a semester at Trinity, but how often do you get to live and experience somewhere completely different? You may even like it enough to consider coming back in the future!”
