On Wednesday, October 8th, Salve Regina University Director of Athletics Dr. Sean Sullivan announced Jay Punsky as the next head coach for the Seahawks’ men’s ice hockey program.

Punsky, a native of South Portland, ME, returns to his alma mater (‘07) after spending the last four seasons at Worcester State, two as a head coach. He’d lead the Lancers to back-to-back #MASCAC playoff appearances.

Beginning his coaching career back in the 2007-2008 season, Punsky held the reins at Middletown High (RI) for six seasons before moving into the junior ranks. He’d work with the Bay State Breakers in the #USPHL, assisting with their Premier team and head coaching the Empire team from 2013-2015. He’d then shift to the NA3EHL, taking over control of the Cape Cod Islanders for the next two seasons, winning the Coach of the Year award in his former season of 2015-2016.

For the 2017-2018 season, Punsky would return to the USPHL with the Boston Jr. Bandits, manning the bench for both Premier & Elite teams. He’d spend three seasons there, eventually becoming general manager of the Bandits’ NCDC team in his final season. He’d shift to the Islanders Hockey Club (MA) in 2020, working with their NCDC, Premier and Elite teams until the 2023-2024 season.

During his time with the Bandits and the Islanders Hockey Club, he led teams that achieved accolades including Premier National Championship runner-up, two Premier National Championship final four appearances, three Premier New England Division Championship titles and five Elite National Championship appearances in a row, among many more accomplishments. Punsky is also a four-time USPHL All-Star Coach Award winner.

The Seahawks open the regular season on Friday, October 31st, at home against Southern Maine as they prepare for their return to the Conference of New England (#CNE) for the 2026-2027 season.
