Enthusiasm for hydropower is running dry in many places—so much so that dams like ones along the Klamath river are being decommissioned. In the US, 65 were removed in 2022 alone. The reasons are varied, but a leading cause is habitat fragmentation. Dams in North America often reach hundreds of feet. Salmon typically jump no higher than 3 feet. If you think hard and crunch the numbers, it becomes clear that salmon can’t clear this hurdle. Fish ladders can help, but it’s often just adding another obstacle to an already upstream battle.
