#BLPnews A former NFL player is seeking justice after he and his daughter were held at gunpoint by Arizona officers who mistook him for a white teenage suspect.

Wesley Leasy, a 53-year-old Black man who once played for the Arizona Cardinals, has filed a notice of claim against the Mesa and Phoenix police departments, seeking $1 million in damages.

“I’ve never been so afraid in my entire life,” Leasy told NBC News.

The incident happened on April 10 when Leasy was picking up his 26-year-old daughter from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Their reunion quickly turned traumatic as police surrounded them with weapons drawn, shouting orders to get on the ground.

Mesa police later admitted that officers were searching for a white male suspect driving a white Mercedes-Benz with temporary tags, but mistakenly targeted Leasy, who was driving a similar vehicle.

Leasy and his daughter were handcuffed and detained for about 20 minutes before officers realized their error. During the encounter, police gave no explanation for the stop.

“The Leasys have suffered mentally and physically from having police rifles pointed at their heads for no reason. We are seeking justice for them,” their attorney Benjamin Taylor said in a statement.
