Cinematographer JP Perry brings the tiny wonders of the natural world to life, capturing insects and other small creatures in extraordinary detail. For a NatGeo series celebrating America’s national parks, JP built a tabletop macro “set” inside a structure still under construction in Hawaii. This allowed him to control the environment while keeping the jungle as a living backdrop.

Macro cinematography comes with unique challenges, including the need for intense lighting and precise focus. JP relied on the RED GEMINI for its low-light performance (he now shoots on the V-RAPTOR), paired with a variety of probe and microscope lenses. The PL mount provided the solid connection necessary for steady, intricate macro shots.

For JP, natural history filmmaking is about revealing the hidden world under our noses. By combining camera movement, creative lighting, and immersive cinematic techniques, he invites audiences to experience these unseen moments and connect with the intricacies of nature.
