## Caption

Spent a few days leaf peeping on Vermont’s Long Trail! The Long Trail is the oldest long-distance hiking trail in the country and inspired the creation of the Appalachian Trail. It runs from the Vermont/Canada border to the Vermont/Massachusetts border. I went out in hopes of hiking the entire thing if the weather held (October is pretty late in the season and an iffy time to go) but once I got out there I pretty quickly realized it just wasn’t the right time. The nights were long and cold, the terrain was maddeningly slow-going with lots of technical footwork and crazy steep climbs and descents, and I was still feeling pretty mentally burned out from thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail this year. So after 50 miles, I decided to call it a day. Huge thanks to my friend chasingtrailsart for driving me to the northern terminus and hosting me on my way out, and to my friend Workhorse for picking me up and taking me around Vermont as a tourist! My takeaway? If you’re gonna hike the Long Trail, be mentally ready to move at a snail’s pace. I just was not in the mood for that. 😆
