The oldest materials housed in the archives of MCHC’s H. Furlong Baldwin Library date back to 1539. Keeping resources safe over many centuries is part of the job of an archivist! Members of our team are tasked with removing staples to prevent rusting metal from damaging and discoloring paper over time. Plastic paper clips are used instead, as they won't mark, stain, or tear paper in order to keep items properly organized. Letters, maps, and other papers are unfolded and stored flat, reducing creases and keeping pages intact. When new acquisitions are being processed, conservation steps like these are taken with each unique piece.

#AskAnArchivist Day is tomorrow—drop your questions about the MCHC archives in the comments!
