President Donald Trump has commuted the sentence of George Santos, a former Republican congressman who was serving seven years in prison for fraud and identify theft.

In a post on social media, Trump wrote that Santos "has been horribly mistreated", adding: "Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY. Good luck George, have a great life!"

Santos left the Federal Correctional Institution Fairton in New Jersey just hours later and was “on his way home”, his attorney Joseph Murray told Agence France-Presse by phone late on Friday.

In April, the former New York representative was sentenced to 87 months in prison, Santos admitted to stealing the identities of 11 people, including from his own family members.

While behind bars, Santos published a letter via a local newspaper pleading to Mr Trump directly.

"Sir, I appeal to your sense of justice and humanity - the same qualities that have inspired millions of Americans to believe in you," he wrote. "I humbly ask that you consider the unusual pain and hardship of this environment and allow me the opportunity to return to my family, my friends, and my community."
