LIONS SWEEP WINDWARD IN POSTSEASON OPENER: The jserra.girlsvb team kicked off the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs in winning fashion on Tuesday, as the Lions swept the Windward Wildcats 25-17, 25-16, 25-16 in a first-round match at JSerra Catholic High School.

JSerra is now 18-14 overall and will head to Thousand Oaks on Thursday for a second-round match against the Lancers, who defeated Sage Hill in four sets in their opening round contest.

It was a tough start to the match for the Lions, who saw junior outside hitter Makayla Ziegler depart after only three points with an ankle injury.

The Lions and Wildcats were tied 9-9 early in the first set, but two kills and a block from junior Katherine Nowak, a kill and an ace from junior Layla Graham, and two blocks from senior Catherine Beadles helped the Lions surge to an eight-point advantage that they would maintain, with the set ending on a kill by senior Charlotte Nowak.

JSerra forged a 11-9 lead in the second set, but three kills from Charlotte Nowak and a block and a kill from senior Ava Ziegler helped ignite a 9-3 run that propelled the Lions to a commanding two set lead.

Katherine Nowak had three early kills in the third set to help JSerra win seven of the first 10 points.

Windward closed the deficit to 15-11, but Katherine Nowak went deep down the line for a kill that sparked JSerra to seven of the next nine points to seize firm control.

Ava Ziegler’s fifth kill of the match sealed the victory and the Lions advancement into the second round.

Charlotte Nowak led the Lions with 15 kills and produced 13 digs, while Katherine Nowak added 14 kills and 17 digs.

Sophomore libero Madison Goodrich was strong again for the Lions, as she produced a team-high 20 digs.

Senior setter Catherine Beadles dished out a team best 29 assists and accumulated 10 digs.

Ava Ziegler added a team-high three blocks.
