When left idle for too long, the original Xbox 🎮 would sometimes emit faint, eerie noises—static crackles, distorted whispers, and what sounded like distant radio chatter 👀. In the stillness of a bedroom or basement, it was easy to mistake for something… supernatural.

But the effect WAS NOT a bug—it was fully intentional. Microsoft deliberately included those sounds in the dashboard’s ambient audio 🎧. According to Xbox spokesperson Larry Hryb (a.k.a. Major Nelson), the developers used altered public domain audio from space missions 🚀 

“Those creepy ambient audio clips were public domain audio from NASA transmissions from the Apollo days that we tweaked for that sound.”
