As the 2025 Season is winding down, I have a few thoughts for some of the up-and-coming PR people starting their journey.

1) Wipe your cell phone’s camera lens BEFORE EVERY PHOTO OR VIDEO, PLEASE. That phone is going in and out of your pocket. It needs to be cleaned.

2) Before you hit "create" on that Facebook business page, make sure that you are ready to be a business. I suggest finding a mentor to learn for a season or two before jumping in with both feet. Create a small portfolio of work BEFORE you start charging people.

3) Know what kind of company you are and promote the deliverables you specialize in. 90% of us on the short track side of things are some kinds of creative service, NOT a marketing company. Figure out what you do and present accordingly.

4) Once you have figured out what you do, find others you can work with when needed. If you are a social media creator, get a list of photographers and videographers that you can hire when you need fresh content. Having people, you can work with opens you up to more clients.

5) Learn best practices. This is as simple as how to format and send out a press release in an email. How to send hires photo files. The difference between all the file types. Find a professional print house for photos. Know how to size and format your work for print. Do you need bleeds? Is your screen calibrated?

6) Make YOUR marketing about your work until you have a solid body of work. Nowadays with social media people get ahead of themselves and worry about creating their "personal brand". And while that can be important in what we do, it only really works when there is good work to back it up. If you make yourself your calling card in the beginning, the client doesn't really know what they are getting. It can lead to some mixed up expectations. And some very short relationships.

7) Have fun with it. It is super easy to go full steam and burn yourself out quickly. Don't turn this into a grind that you will hate. It is just short track racing after all.
If you find anything I said helpful, GREAT! If you didn't, that's ok too!

See everyone at the track in 2026!
