Often called the “ghost cat” for their elusive nature, the Snow leopard species silently roam the rugged mountain ranges of Central Asia ❄️🐾

On this #InternationalSnowLeopardDay, we recognize that their species is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List - a designation we are hoping to reverse. These incredible big cats are masters of adaptation with thick fur to withstand freezing temperatures, wide, fur-covered paws that act as natural snowshoes, and long, bushy tails they wrap around themselves like cozy scarves 🐾

But beyond their beauty, snow leopards play a crucial role as apex predators in their high-altitude ecosystems. By helping to regulate populations of herbivores like blue sheep and ibex, they maintain balance in fragile alpine habitats that are increasingly threatened by climate change, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict. Protecting snow leopards means protecting the health and resilience of entire mountain ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.

Here at your Toronto Zoo, conservation science lies at the heart of everything we do. From genetic research and reproductive technology to habitat restoration and field partnerships, our work connects local actions with global conservation outcomes. We’re proud to participate in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Species Survival Plan® (SSP), which unites accredited zoos across North America in a shared mission to ensure sustainable, genetically diverse populations of snow leopards under human care.

Over the years, 16 snow leopards have been born at your Toronto Zoo, with many contributing to conservation breeding programs and helping to secure the future of this vulnerable species.

This commitment directly supports our new Guardians of Wild Strategic Plan, which places wildlife conservation, sustainability, and community engagement at its core. By integrating cutting-edge conservation science with education and action, your Zoo aims to inspire collective responsibility for the natural world - from the mountain peaks of Central Asia to their habitat right here in our own backyard.
