Have you ever heard your boy say something like, “That’s for girls” or “Only boys do that”? These gender stereotypes, shaped by patriarchal masculinity, can limit boys’ confidence, self-esteem, and emotional well-being. The good news? With thoughtful conversations, we can help boys deconstruct these harmful ideas and grow into whole, healthy men.

Here’s a simple guide for when your boy hears or repeats a gender stereotype:
1️⃣ Start by asking how it felt. Before jumping to correct him, ask how it felt to hear or say the comment. Create space for him to express his emotions.
2️⃣ Show counterexamples. Find videos or examples online of people breaking that stereotype—like girls who skateboard or boys who love drawing. Show him that these “rules” don’t hold up in real life.
3️⃣ Encourage passion over stereotypes. Talk about how people should follow what they love, regardless of gender, and how empowering it is to support others in doing the same.
4️⃣ Teach him to speak out. Encourage him to stand up to other boys when they reinforce these stereotypes, helping create a positive ripple effect in his community.
5️⃣ Follow up. Don’t let it be a one-time conversation. Check in after a few days or weeks and celebrate any positive shifts in his attitude.

When we help boys deconstruct gender stereotypes, we preserve their self-esteem, improve their emotional well-being, and teach them to build healthier relationships. Boys and men who cling to rigid notions of patriarchal masculinity are more likely to suffer from poor mental and physical health outcomes, engage in violence, and struggle in their relationships. By raising boys with empathy and confidence, we make the world safer and better for all.
