Many of you have asked for a script — here it is!! 

You: “Hey buddy, can we talk about something important? It’s something that happens to a lot of people who have a uterus, like girls and women, as they grow up.”

Boy: “Sure.”

You: “It’s called a menstrual cycle or a period. It’s a normal part of growing up. Every month, a girl’s body gets ready to have a baby- even though she might not want to have one right now. Inside her body, there’s something called a uterus, and it helps hold a baby if she ever does want one.”

Boy: “But what if she doesn’t have a baby?”

You: “Most of the time-she won’t. When her body realizes there’s no baby, it doesn’t need the extra stuff that was getting ready, like blood and tissue. So, her body lets it go, and it comes out through her vagina. That’s called a period. It happens once a month, and it’s totally normal.” (Feel free to take this one step further but mine haven’t asked where babies come from yet!!) 

Boy: “Does it hurt?”

You: “Sometimes, it can feel uncomfy, like having a belly ache or being tired, but there are ways to feel better, like resting or using medicine. Everyone’s body is different, so some people have an easier time with it, and some might have a harder time.”

Boy: “Do boys have periods?” 

You: “Nope! boys don’t have periods, but it’s good to understand it because lots of people around you—like friends, sisters, moms—might have periods, and it’s just part of how their bodies work.”

Boy: “Oh ok!”

You: “it’s important because it helps you understand how different people’s bodies work and makes you a good friend and family member. Knowing this can help you be supportive and respectful to people around you.”

Boy: “That makes sense!” 

You: “ok great! If you ever have more questions, feel free to ask. It’s always okay to talk about things like this.”
