How do you go back somewhere you didn’t directly come from? My parents were born in India…but I was born here.

With this logic, we should all be grabbing a boat to “go back” to where we came from, right? Unless you’re Native American and indigenous to this soil. 

The beauty of America for me has always been the array of cultures, religions, and ethnic backgrounds - melding of so many differences that should be celebrated. I recognize how naive this thought may be - and was faced head on with this in my recent post’s comment section.

I was hoping this comment like so many others was written by a bot - but he’s pictured here with two young daughters. Those daughters could easily be classmates of brown children like my own. So how do I equip my boys to face comments like this? To be honest, they are once removed from our culture - even though I’m doing my best to keep it alive.  A comment like this will come as a shock.

What do you tell your own children - any insight is appreciated ❤️
