#BLPnews Praying for this young man’s mental 🥺🙏🏾 A high school student at Kenwood High School in Baltimore County, Maryland, was handcuffed by police after an artificial intelligence weapon-detection system misidentified his snack as a firearm. The student, identified by local media as Taki Allen, had eaten a bag of chips following football practice and later crumpled the empty bag and placed it in his pocket. 

On Monday evening, just after 7 p.m., surveillance cameras linked to the AI system flagged Allen as holding what appeared to be a gun. Armed officers subsequently arrived, ordered him to the ground, put him in handcuffs and conducted a search—finding no weapon. According to Allen, officers later pointed to the image captured by the system showing him with the chip bag, and told him the pose “looked like a gun.” 

The detection system is operated by Omnilert, which the county school system adopted last year for weapon-detection via existing school-camera infrastructure. It enables the software to alert school safety staff and law enforcement when potential threats are detected. 

In a letter to parents following the incident, the school administration stated that they “received an alert that an individual on school grounds may have been in possession of a weapon,” but the alert was cancelled by administrators after determining no weapon existed. Counselling services were offered to affected students. 

Allen’s grandfather expressed concern for his grandson’s emotional well-being, noting that the student now feels unsafe simply being outside the school building and doubts the school’s care for his welfare. 

The incident has sparked wider discussion about the limitations and risks of relying on AI-based surveillance in sensitive settings such as schools specifically the risk of false positives, the need for human review, and the potential trauma inflicted when algorithms trigger high-stakes law-enforcement responses.
