Jan Kerouac wrote about her difficult childhood spent in poverty, her early exposure to drugs, her mother's attempts to keep Jan and her brother with a roof over their head; interspersed with chapters of her teenage years spent on the road, in Mexico, in semi-abandoned houses, working as a prostitute, and keeping the company of an array of artists and colourful characters.
