Ever wonder what artists use to make the things they must? 👀

For #InternationalArtistsDay go behind the scenes with leahmartharosenberg to see how her installation "The Things We Use to Make the Things We Must" came together at sfmoma.

Leah dug into SFMOMA’s Artist Materials Collection—an archive of the everyday tools and objects artists used to create—to build a color legend that turns familiar things (like pencils, tape, and toothpicks) into something extraordinary.

Here’s how it unfolded ⬇️
1️⃣ Visited the Conservation Department to find inspiration in the artists’ own tools.
2️⃣ Selected items for the Materials Wall
3️⃣ Painted the Koret mural, using a palette inspired by artworks and everyday materials in SFMOMA’s collection—from Lichtenstein’s dot stencils to Twombly’s chalkboard-like marks.
4️⃣ Worked with photographer Francis Baker (francis_baker_studio) to stitch 111 photos of studio tools and notes into one sweeping vinyl wall.
5️⃣ Installation + finishing touches.
6️⃣ Hosted an event where six artists shared how materials shape their own work.

A reminder, on this day celebrating artists everywhere: the everyday is full of color, meaning, and potential.
