It's #TravelTuesday and #ASUEverywhere is taking you to the Grand Canyon, often considered one of the Wonders of the World and the 17th U.S. National Park, established in 1919. This is just one of the virtual field trips available through ASU for You at vft.asu.edu.⁣

🌊 The Colorado River carved out the Grand Canyon about 230 miles north of Phoenix. What makes the mile-deep, 277-mile long canyon so unique is that it exposes nearly 2 billion years of the Earth's geological history.

💪 This stream in the North Rim's Nankoweap Canyon transports sand and gravel, giving large and small rocks their rounded shape as they tumble … some rocks are so big that they can only be carried by the stream when flooded.

⤴️ These limestone beds in Nankoweap Canyon start out nearly horizontal, then begin to tilt upwards, suggesting the presence of a fault line.

🏖 The lowest, bottom layer of the Grand Canyon is called the Tapeats Sandstone, made from beach sand that has turned into rock under the pressure of overlying layers.

💧 You can see differences in the waters of the main Colorado River and the Little Colorado River here at their confluence. It takes a while for the waters to mix together because they have different densities, like oil and water.

⏱ Side or slot canyons, like this one known as Carbon Canyon, have many layers that can tell you clues about the time in which they were formed.

⛰ Vaseys Paradise is a spring in the Grand Canyon that consists of several waterfalls created by groundwater emanating from the upper cliff faces.

🔍 Fossilized marine organisms can be found in the Grand Canyon's Redwall Limestone cliff formations.

ASU for You offers a variety of K-12 learning tools for those teaching and learning from home. 🏡 Explore virtual field trips like this one and more designed to keep your learning on track at asuforyou.asu.edu 💻⁣⁣⁣⁣
