ASU Lecturer @christinacarrasquilla (first picture, bottom middle) met Kenyan Janet Silantoi (first picture, center middle in blue jacket) over a taco truck lunch at a @asupublicservice event last year. The two tech enthusiasts bonded over their passion for sparking girls’ interest in #STEM careers. And just like that, a conversation over tacos ignited an impactful outreach initiative that would span more than 9,000 miles.⁣

Last year, Christina traveled to Kenya to work with Janet at a private girls school in that country. Christina brought the #ASU design-thinking course techniques she teaches for @asu.git and translated them for a high school app-building boot camp. The girls ideated on apps that could solve local problems. Some focused on different forms of corruption, which is something that affects their daily lives.⁣

Christina says she and the girls saw how working together to solve problems can make the world better at a small scale. "As graphic designers, we don’t often think we make an impact on the world. But we design the experience of technology and we do have the ability to make a global impact"⁣
