On this Travel Tuesday, #ASUEverywhere heads to the remote Mexican island of El Pardito to catch up with @asu_sfis Assistant Research Professor Jesse Senko and his quest to save sea turtles 🐢 ⁣

The problem: Sea #turtles, vital to the health of the world’s oceans, become entangled in fishing nets as bycatch and drown. Jesse Senko (second image, left), with PhD student Janie Reavis (right), has collaborated with teams across #arizonastateuniversity to develop a solution, and one of the places where they are implementing this is the Sea of Cortez, off the coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico, since it's an important habitat for endangered sea turtles.⁣

Jesse’s 💡idea was attaching solar-powered lights to fishing nets, and they work by allowing the turtles to see and avoid the nets. Jesse is a #conservationist, not an engineer, so he needed help developing solar lights that could withstand a harsh marine environment, and thus he teamed up with engineers from @asuengineering and ASU’s Solar Power Laboratory to develop the lights. ⁣

The East Pacific hawksbill turtle is among the most endangered sea turtle populations and one of the oldest creatures on Earth. Jesse hopes his lighting technology will help ensure a brighter future for them and other sea turtles around the globe 🌎 ⁣
