#TSRDidYouKnow: #Roommates, millions of low-income Americans could lose access to food aid starting Nov. 1 as the government shutdown drags on. According to Politico, 25 states, including California, Arkansas, Hawaii, Indiana, Mississippi, and New Jersey, have begun warning residents that they won’t receive their November SNAP (food stamp) benefits unless Congress ends the shutdown soon. ___________________________________
The USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service has told states to pause all benefit distributions until further notice. SNAP, which helps more than 42 million people buy groceries, gives families about $187 monthly to cover essentials. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey spoke out this week, calling out President #DonaldTrump, saying he’s “the first president in U.S. history to cut off SNAP benefits to people in America.”___________________________________
“The state funding can’t begin to match what the federal government provides,” Healey added, noting her state will also halt benefits Nov. 1. This is the fourth week of the govt shutdown, which has left programs like SNAP and WIC (which supports low-income mothers and infants) caught in the middle. States are scrambling to use emergency funds, but that money is running out fast. If things continue, the administration would reportedly need over $8 billion to keep SNAP running. SNAP has $5B in contingency funds and USDA has about $30B in contingency funds that can keep localities afloat at least for part of the month, if funding is paused.
