Never break the will of a strong willed child.

They're the kid that wears the blue shirt when you ask them to wear the white one. They're the child that walks backwards in the Space Mountain line because everyone else is walking forwards. They're the kid that spends an hour rescuing a bee at a Hawaiian beach, while wearing one sock, because a band-aid wasn't suitable for her wound.

Strong willed children have powerful emotions all the way around. They love hard and yet they go down swinging..They're the kids who become leaders, the kids who are less likely to succumb to peer pressure and the kids who stand up for others.

Our family was at one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and Maggie chose to spend her time successfully saving a bumble bee. That's her. Saved the bee... then stood her ground over her sneaker choice.

When parenting strong willed kids, ask yourself this, "Is their choice a bad choice or just different than yours?" Strong willed kids want to learn for themselves so they test limits. Pick your battles when safety isn't a factor. Offer options you can control that allow for autonomy... "You can wear or carry your coat to school." Focus on connection instead of correction. "We need to take a break from the ipad so your brain can be healthy. I love how fast you can solve your math homework and I want to make sure your brain stays safe." Offer "do-overs" instead of immediate reprimands. "Hey, that's not how we handle the situation. Let's have a do-over so we can enjoy the day."

In the moments of frustration, in the moments of willful independence, there are also these small moments of greatness 💗
