Ever wonder what a bat sounds like? 🦇

The answer is silence - at least to human ears! Since we can only hear sounds between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz, most of the high-pitched echolocation calls bats make go completely unnoticed by us. 

As we celebrate #BatWeek, it’s important to share that the Field Conservation team at your Toronto Zoo uses specialized recording devices to “listen in” on bats in the wild. By analyzing these high-pitched calls, researchers can discover which species are present and where they’re hanging out - essential insights that guide vital conservation work 🦇

Did you know? Your Toronto Zoo’s Native Bat Conservation Program is dedicated to protecting and restoring populations of native bat species across Ontario through research, habitat protection, and public education. This initiative supports field-based monitoring of local bat populations, collaboration with community scientists, and rehabilitation efforts for bats impacted by disease and habitat loss. 

As part of our Guardians of Wild Strategic Plan, initiatives like the Native Bat Conservation Program reflect the Zoo’s broader commitment to Field Conservation, emphasizing evidence-based actions, partnerships with conservation agencies like the nwmocanada, and playing a leadership role in safeguarding Canada’s biodiversity.
