Federal law enforcement officers have been sent to Memphis under former President Donald Trump’s “Law and Order” initiative — a national plan aimed at reducing violent crime in major U.S. cities.

The deployment reportedly includes FBI and Homeland Security agents working alongside local police. While Tennessee Governor Bill Lee backed the move, citing Memphis’s violent crime rate as 1,250 per 50,000 residents (double that of Nashville), local officials are raising concerns about how federal involvement could affect community trust and local policing.

Trump pointed to Memphis as a priority city, claiming,

“The city of Memphis, Tennessee, is suffering from tremendous levels of violent crime that have overwhelmed its local government’s ability to respond effectively.”

He added,

“In a little while, you’re going to see some numbers you’re not going to believe… and I think you’ll probably start with Memphis.”

But Memphis Police data shows murders are at a six-year low — even as officers cite challenges like staff shortages, morale issues, and lenient bail policies.
