City of Memphis secures $3.2M from Elon Musk’s xAI to invest directly in local neighborhoods.

Mayor Paul Young’s administration confirmed that xAI has paid all taxes owed — creating a special revenue fund aimed at improving infrastructure, housing, and quality of life in communities surrounding the company’s Colossus supercomputer.

Councilwoman Yolanda Cooper-Sutton said residents will have a voice in how the funds are spent:

“This is the people’s money. We wanna make sure it’s used for the people.”

Beyond taxes, xAI is fueling new opportunities — co-hosting job fairs at Crosstown Concourse with the Greater Memphis Workforce Development Board to connect locals with tech-driven, high-paying careers.

“We know that jobs are coming. We know that talent is here,” said Melody Freemon, Executive Director of GMWDB.

This partnership marks a shift toward making sure Memphis innovation doesn’t just grow companies — it grows communities.
