Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum is not backing down and reminding Spain that it still owes Mexico an apology for its centuries-long conquest. At a Monday meeting at the National Palace, la presidenta said her government is still waiting for Spain’s letter of forgiveness, echoing the 2019 letter sent by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador to King Felipe VI of Spain requesting that the country apologize “for the atrocities of the past.” 

“We never agreed with the way they responded, and we agreed with the letter that President López Obrador sent, and we are still waiting for this response,” Sheinbaum said.
