An officer was injured and a suspect is dead following a police-involved shooting early Wednesday morning in Mesa.

Police say they responded to a trespassing call near Ray and Sossaman around 3 a.m. When officers arrived, the suspect became combative and fled. After a pursuit, police used a grappler device to stop the vehicle, but the suspect continued to resist and fired shots from inside, striking one officer.

A standoff followed, and when officers approached the vehicle, the suspect was found dead from a gunshot wound. The officer is in stable condition, and no other suspects are outstanding.

Authorities are asking the public to avoid the area as the investigation continues.
