As Route 66 prepares to celebrate its centennial in 2026, SavingPlaces and GoogleArtsCulture, in partnership with over 20 organizations, present an unparalleled storytelling hub honoring the power and history of this iconic American roadway.

From a former filling station in Luther, Oklahoma to a motel in Shamrock, Texas to a Mexican restaurant in San Bernardino, California, Route 66 has endless stories to tell, and now you can explore them with a few clicks on your laptop or smart device. 
 
The Google Arts & Culture Route 66 project takes you from the familiar—roadside attractions and natural wonders—to the hidden histories and first-hand accounts from those who know the route best. 

As one of America’s most iconic highways, Route 66 occupies a unique place in history that continues to define our nation’s identity—representing our national spirit as well as our tapestry of diverse cultures and histories.
