Besides it being Halloween today (and on this last Friday in October), we also celebrate #WorldLemurDay - in honour of one of Madagascar’s most recognizable and charismatic species 🐒

With their bright, curious eyes and signature black-and-white striped tails, this unique primates species is a true symbol of Madagascar’s rich biodiversity.

Sadly, all 100+ lemur species which include the Ring-tailed lemur, continue to face serious threats from habitat loss, deforestation, and illegal hunting. That’s why as Guardians of Wild, protecting them has never been more important.

Closer to home and here at your Toronto Zoo, we’re proud to care for a troop of 5 Ring-tailed lemurs who act as important ambassadors for their wild counterparts. Every day, they help us to inspire our guests and members to learn more about the importance of conservation science and the delicate ecosystems that make Madagascar so special.

But our commitment doesn’t stop here in Toronto 🇲🇬

Through our long-standing conservation partnership with Planet Madagascar, we’re helping protect lemur populations and their habitats right where they live. Together, we support community-led conservation projects that focus on forest restoration, wildlife monitoring, and sustainable livelihoods, ensuring that both people and wildlife can thrive side by side.

Members of our Zoo staff also proudly participate in the Partners in Protection program, which enables them to contribute directly to on-the-ground conservation efforts in Madagascar. Through this program, our team help local researchers and communities save species, safeguard forests, and strengthen global collaboration for wildlife protection. This year, in particular, Ben Martin from your zoogreenhouse team travelled in-situ to consult on Planet Madagascar's reforestation initiatives.

When you visit your Zoo or support wildlife and conservation science, you become part of that mission too. Every action, whether big or small, helps build a brighter future for lemurs and all the remarkable creatures we share this planet with 🌍
