🇵🇪 Protests against the Peruvian government have taken over the streets of Lima and Callao. As a result, interim president José Jeri has now declared a 30-day state of emergency. The declaration comes  after nearly a month of protests against government corruption and organize crime that led to the ousting of former leader Dina Boluarte by Congress and have continued following the appointment of Jeri. Gen Z activists, who have been leading the protests, believe Jeri should resign so Peru can have a “clean slate” so that the rising crime rates can improve. Murders in Peru have increased by 35.9% in 2024 compared with the previous year as reported by the Guardian on October 25, and the country has seen an estimated 18,000 extortion cases this year, up 30% from last year, as reported by Al Jazeera on October 22.

“We are fed up with what we have to live through, that’s why so many young people have joined this movement,” Milagros Rojas of Generation Z Alliance said. “We have grown up in a country where corruption has been normalized. We young people want a modern Peru; we want a country where we can live and not have to emigrate in search of a better quality of life.”
