As we celebrate Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy this #MandelaDay, I’m thinking about the remarkable group of changemakers I met during my trip to Cape Town a few years back. 

They are alumni of the ObamaFoundation’s Leaders Africa and Fellows programs—and they are making a difference all across the continent, from supporting education to improving global health.

Barack and I have always believed that leaders are most effective when they lean on a network of peer support — a “kitchen table” as I like to call it. That’s why I am so heartened by all the great work taking place within our Obama Leadership Network. They’re making connections. They’re learning from each other, helping one another. And together, they’re helping solve some of the most pressing issues in South Africa and beyond.

Nelson Mandela believed that all of us, no matter our age, can make an impact if we direct our energy and dedication toward others. These young leaders are doing exactly that—and I can’t wait to see the good they create.
