The DPRK announced on Wednesday that it had test-fired sea-to-surface cruise missiles in the Yellow Sea, just days before U.S. President Donald Trump’s scheduled visit to ROK for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders’ meeting.⁣

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the modified ship-based cruise missiles were fired vertically and flew for more than 7,800 seconds along a pre-set route before striking their target. No details were provided about the missiles’ range or specifications.⁣

DPRK leader Kim Jong Un did not attend the launch. The test was overseen by Pak Jong-chon, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, who said the country had made “significant progress” in putting its nuclear forces on a practical basis. He described the test as part of the DPRK’s ongoing effort to strengthen its nuclear deterrent and ensure the reliability of its strategic weapons.⁣
