David Beckham, one of Britain’s most celebrated footballers, was knighted by King Charles at Windsor Castle on Tuesday, in recognition of his decades-long contribution to sport and charitable work. The 50-year-old former England captain received the honor more than 20 years after first being awarded a royal distinction for his achievements in football. Beckham, a lifelong admirer of the royal family, attended the ceremony wearing a suit designed by his wife, Victoria Beckham, the fashion designer and former Spice Girls member. He and the King shared a brief but warm exchange, with Charles seen smiling and laughing as they spoke. Following the ceremony, Beckham told reporters he became emotional when he learned of the knighthood. “It’s such a big moment for our family and it’s so special,” he said, joking that he wouldn’t mind if his children now called him ‘Sir Dad.’ “I grew up in a humble background in the East End of London, always wanting to be a professional footballer — and now I’m standing here at Windsor Castle with the most important monarchy in the world. It doesn’t get any better,” Beckham added. Born in east London, Beckham made his Premier League debut for Manchester United in 1995, going on to win six league titles, two FA Cups, and the Champions League before stints with Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain, plus 115 appearances for England.
