Without knowing it, I said goodbye to everything and everyone I knew and loved for good.

My parents told me we were just going on a vacation to the U.S., but we were really leaving our home in El Salvador. Moving to a new country meant everything was unfamiliar—new language, new culture, new faces—and I felt alone. 

Just a month after moving, the bishop asked me to be president of the deacons quorum in my ward. I was so overwhelmed. Why me? There were others who spoke English better and who seemed more prepared. But focusing on my calling changed everything. Instead of being stuck in my own struggles, I reached out to the young men who also felt alone. I visited them, listened, and reminded them they’re children of God. As I served, my English improved, and I felt joy and built friendships. 

So, even though I had to adjust to a new life, learn a new language, and manage school and Church responsibilities, I found strength. And that strength came by looking beyond myself and focusing on serving others. That service brought me closer to Christ and helped me to heal and be healed through His love. —Jeremy #LookUntoChrist
