How can we understand global warming as it relates to its impact on Polar Bear Survival? 🐻‍❄️

Global warming refers to the long-term increase in the Earth’s average surface temperature due to rising levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. When fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and methane gas are burned for energy, they release carbon dioxide (CO₂) and other greenhouse gases. These gases accumulate in the atmosphere, forming a heat-trapping layer that contributes to the warming of the air, land, and oceans ❄️

As this “heat-trapping blanket” thickens, the resulting climatic changes have profound consequences across ecosystems, particularly in the Arctic. Rising temperatures are accelerating the melting of sea ice — a critical habitat for polar bears and the northern communities that share these environments.

During this #PolarBearWeek, we are acutely aware how sea ice plays a vital role in polar bear ecology. It serves as an important springboard for hunting seals, a surface for migration, and a stable environment for reproduction and maternal care. Without sufficient sea ice, polar bears are forced to remain on land for extended periods, unable to access their primary food sources. This has dire implications for their health and survival: on average, a polar bear may lose approximately one kilogram (2.2 pounds) of body weight per day while fasting. Over the course of a year, this can amount to roughly 160 kilograms (360 pounds) of weight loss. 

For comparison, Aurora, one of your Toronto Zoo’s polar bears, is 23 years old and weighs approximately 350 kilograms (770 pounds) - equivalent to nearly half the weight a wild Polar bear might lose in a single fasting season.

On the other hand, the effects of climate change extend beyond wildlife. The loss of sea ice and thawing permafrost threaten the livelihoods, infrastructure, and food security of northern communities, highlighting the interconnectedness of climate systems and human well-being.
