We’re honoured to share that your Toronto Zoo received the inaugural Animal Welfare Award from the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) at their Annual Conference in Colombia last week. This global recognition celebrates our Zoo’s unwavering commitment to advancing the highest standards of animal welfare and care.

At your Toronto Zoo, Animal Welfare is everything we do and is at the heart of our mission - woven into every decision we make. From daily enrichment and nutrition to innovative habitat design and veterinary care, our dedicated team ensures each animal thrives physically, mentally, and socially. This award underscores our leadership in a holistic, science-based approach to care that’s rooted in our OneHealth philosophy, recognizing that the health and well-being of animals, people, and the environment are all connected.

As we offer thanks for this achievement, while also celebrating #PolarBearWeek, this award is a perfect reminder of the vital work we do to protect and care for species facing challenges in the wild. From the tundra-inspired habitat at your Zoo to field research and conservation partnerships, our commitment extends far beyond our gates even to places like Churchill, Manitoba where a number of our staff over the years have supported important conservation partners like Polar Bears International 🐻‍❄️

As part of our Animal Welfare work, and utilizing artificial intelligence tools, we’ve been able to work with a number of cameras in their Tundra Trek habitat. With success, we have been able to distinguish Polar bears like Hudson and Juno from each other and can study all of their behaviours - locomotion, swimming, object manipulation, foraging, using enrichment devices and so much more.

The technology we use can also look at what areas in their habitat they choose to use on a more regular basis, especially when Wildlife Care is not present 🐾
