BTS leader RM made history on Wednesday as the first K-pop artist to speak at the APEC CEO Summit, using his keynote address to highlight the power of cultural diversity and advocate for increased support for the arts.⁠

Speaking at the Gyeongju Arts Center in North Gyeongsang Province, Kim Nam-joon emphasized that K-pop's global impact is rooted in its fusion of influences while preserving a distinct Korean identity. “K-pop is not just a genre of music. It’s a 360-degree, total package of music, dance, performance, visual style, storytelling, music video and even social media,” he explained.⁠

RM also used the platform to urge world leaders to recognize and invest in culture alongside economics. “Culture is like a river… the fastest messenger that carries diversity and resonance,” he said. “When you think about investing in tomorrow’s generations, think about culture.”⁠

The event was part of a broader cultural session titled “Cultural and Creative Industries in the APEC Region and the Soft Power of K-culture.” Hosted by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, this year’s APEC CEO Summit in Gyeongju welcomed over 1,700 global business leaders and representatives from 16 of the 21 APEC member economies.⁠
