Rep. Sarah McBride has opened up about the challenges of serving in Congress during the current social and political climate — and how her parents’ steadfast love has helped her stay grounded through it all.

Speaking to LGBTQ Nation, the Delaware representative reflected on entering office during a “Republican trifecta” under Donald Trump, where, she said, “hundreds of millions of dollars would have been specifically spent on trans issues.”

McBride described the toll of watching her parents witness that hostility firsthand, noting that she had previously shielded them from much of it.

“It’s been hard for me to watch my parents have to grapple with that hate,” she shared. “I lucked out in the parent lottery… My parents remain two of my best friends… The love and support that I have from my family make it all bearable.”

Now serving as one of the most visible trans elected officials in the U.S., McBride said her parents have been “critical partners” in helping her navigate an increasingly polarized political climate — guiding her, she said, “with strategy, with discipline, with compassion, and with principle in really difficult waters.”
