As Queerty reports, Firstman’s character Charlie is part of the core cast, not a sidekick or punchline. “I think it’s one of the best gay characters I’ve seen on paper,” he told the outlet, acknowledging that real friendships deserve full exploration.

Sennott said she crafted the series with Firstman in mind, drawing on their real-life friendship. She told Queerty she’s long observed how in media, gay characters in those roles often become “OK, now back to me” props, stripped of depth. ‘I Love LA’ wants to shift that — and give him emotional territory, complexity, and a voice.
