“I CAN’T REMOVE THE PIT FROM MY PEACH!” 🍑 A little lesson from @kalejunkie in response to I questions I’ve received lately 👏🏼. You know how sometimes you cut a peach in half, and MAGIC!!! It opens and you can easily remove the pit. But other times, you can’t even get the darn thing open 😤. ⁣
⁣
Here’s why and what you need to know. ⁣
⁣
There are TWO* main peach categories: clingstone and freestone. Peaches are not labeled one or the other, so if you aren’t sure, you’ll need to ASK. ⁣
⁣
FREESTONE: these are peaches that you can easily cut in half and pop the peach right out! ⁣
⁣
CLINGSTONE: these are peaches with pits that are difficult to remove (they CLING to the skin of the peach). ⁣
⁣
What this means: if you are looking for peaches you can easily slice in half, remove the pit, and throw in the grill/oven/air fryer, you’ll want a FREESTONE.⁣
⁣
One is NOT better than the other, they are just different! If you are going to eat your peach the way you’d bite into an apple, clingstone is fine! Clingstone is also great to make jellies and jam. Just slice the peach around the pit.⁣
⁣
So now that you know the difference; how can you tell which peach you’ve got? ⁣
⁣
1. Ask! I went to the farmers market yesterday and asked - the farmers were happy to tell me which was what. ⁣
2. If you are buying from a grocery store on the earlier part of peach season (now!), they are most likely CLINGSTONE. Clingstone usually appears first bc freestone are harvested mid-season.⁣
3. Clingstone are usually smaller in size than freestone!⁣
⁣
*There is also a smaller, third category of peaches, referred to as SEMI-FREESTONE. They are a newer, hybridized variety of peach, a combination between clingstone and freestone peaches—usually clingstone before fully ripe, and then become freestone when the peach has ripened.⁣
⁣
I hope this was helpful! If you like tips like this, be sure to follow me @kalejunkie for more!⁣
