Corey O’Connor  took his first action as mayor-elect on Wednesday morning, thanking Pittsburghers for their votes from the corner of Forward and Murray avenues in Squirrel Hill with a sign and wave.

The gesture was a nod to his father, Bob O’Connor, who was elected Pittsburgh’s mayor 20 years ago. He died of a rare form of brain cancer in 2006, just months after taking office.

During his victory speech, Mr. O’Connor, 41, said he’s prepared for the job of managing both the highs and lows of a city in flux.

“The road we are travelling is long and steeply uphill,” he said. “I am asking you to join me in remaking this great city. The people of Pittsburgh, this victory belongs to you … I will work tirelessly to commit to the promises that we made throughout this campaign.”
