While it may be one of Suffolk’s youngest student organizations, _su_tka hit the ground running on March 21 with a dynamic Women’s History Month panel discussion. Founded this January, TKA honors Suffolk’s Cape Verdean and Haitian communities, and for their panel the students welcomed some of the city and state’s top women leaders, including Boston City Council President Ruthzee Louijeune (the first Haitian American to hold that office), City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson (a native of Cape Verde and the first African immigrant elected to the City Council), and Jennifer Barthelemy-Nerestant, MPA, MPA ’21, a Haitian American who leads DEI efforts for the masseohhs.

Much of the discussion centered on the contributions of Boston’s immigrant communities and the challenges that new migrants face, particularly in a politically charged election year. “Oftentimes there’s a scarcity framing around these issues that we need to reject,” Louijeune said. “We have the ability to care for each other. We have the ability to do multiple things.”
