On this day, August 24, we celebrate the birth and brilliance of Marsha P. Johnson (1945–1992). A revolutionary spirit, drag mother, and fierce defender of those most cast aside, Marsha’s legacy remains a guiding light for all of us. She stood on the frontlines of the Stonewall Inn uprising, alongside Sylvia Rivera and so many others, sparking a movement that forever reshaped queer liberation.

At SistersPGH, we now carry that flame inside our own Stonewall Inn here in Pittsburgh — a space built in the spirit of Marsha’s fight for safety, dignity, and chosen family. Just as she and Sylvia created STAR to house and care for homeless trans youth, our Stonewall Inn exists to provide housing, radical rest, mental health support, food, showers, and community care for our Trans siblings. These are not luxuries; they are the necessities Marsha fought for in a world that too often denied us everything.

Marsha did not only dream of freedom; she lived it, fought for it, and created it in real time. Sisters PGH continues that same work: making sure Trans folks, especially Black and Brown trans people not only survive, but thrive in love, joy, and resilience.

Happy Heavenly Birthday, Marsha P. Johnson. May our work always honor the fire you carried, and may your light forever guide us through the darkness.
