No. 18 Oklahoma held off No. 14 Tennessee 33-27 on Saturday night, powered by a strong defensive effort and a late touchdown run from John Mateer. The Sooners quarterback threw for 159 yards, added 80 on the ground, and sealed the win with a one-yard score in the final two minutes as Oklahoma improved to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in SEC play.

Oklahoma’s defense forced three turnovers that led to 13 points, including a 71-yard fumble return for a touchdown by R. Thomas Mason. Kicker Tate Sandell converted four field goals — two from 55 yards and another from 51 — to keep the Sooners in control despite being outgained 255-99 in the first half.

Tennessee (6-3, 3-3 SEC) rallied late behind quarterback Joey Aguilar, who threw for 393 yards and three touchdowns, including a 15-yard strike to Mike Matthews with under two minutes left to pull within two. However, the Volunteers’ onside kick attempt failed, and Oklahoma ran out the clock after Xavier Robinson’s 43-yard run set up Mateer’s clinching touchdown.

The Sooners’ pass rush made the difference, sacking Aguilar four times and limiting Tennessee to just 63 rushing yards. Braylon Staley led the Vols’ receiving corps with 75 yards and two scores, but turnovers and defensive pressure proved too much to overcome.
