Telling a Deaf or Hard of Hearing person to “read my lips” might sound helpful, but it’s not. Here’s why:

✨ Lipreading is not universal or easy — only about 30–40% of English sounds are visible on the lips.
✨ It puts the responsibility on the Deaf person instead of making communication accessible for both people.
✨ It ignores the fact that many Deaf people prefer sign language, captions, or other supports to communicate effectively.

Accessibility is about meeting people where they are — not demanding they work harder to understand you. 💛

Instead of “read my lips,” try:
✔️ Writing it down
✔️ Using gestures or signs
✔️ Turning on captions
✔️ Asking what communication method works best

Respect goes further than lips ever could. 👏
